Abstract:
The birth of modern medical science and rapidly evolving technology has led to quite significant strides in our understanding of the human body. Still at the top of the list, sits the brain. The more we learn about the brain, the more we understand it’s true complexities and the more we realize how little we actually know. For some time now we have understood that the frontal lobe, or more specifically, the prefrontal cortex, is linked to personality, concentration and decision making, functions that are not specific to humans. They are far different in humans than in our closest relatives, the great apes. Upon looking into this question, we begin to reveal some of the extraordinary complexities of the brain. The prefrontal cortex acts like a control tower. This “control tower” is interconnected with countless other regions of the brain that send out bias signals, which in a way, help coordinate different areas of the brain to work towards fulfilling a common goal. This interconnected regulation is referred to as Executive Function. From what we understand, the larger and thicker the prefrontal cortex, the more efficient ones executive functions, which suggests that there is direct correlation between the form of the prefrontal cortex on the neural level and it’s Function and Efficiency.
