STORYLINE
Orthodox Christians around the world celebrated Easter on Sunday, worshipping at candlelit services from Russia to Ethiopia.
Orthodox churches use a different calendar from the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, so the Orthodox celebration of Easter usually falls on a different date.
In Moscow, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church hailed Russians'' optimism.
Alexy II, patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, wished Easter joy to people despite any hardships in life and called for support of the lonely and the sick.
Over five thousand people attended the evening prayer at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the massive golden-domed church near the Kremlin that was destroyed by Stalin and rebuilt in the 1990s.
At times, Alexy II tried to hide his fatigue after many hours of worship.
He is to minister services almost daily on the Easter Week and will lead a liturgy at the Assumption Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin on Monday.
The patriarch has a history of poor health and there is some speculation about his successor.
The Russian Orthodox Church, all but banned under the Soviet Union, has experienced a major resurgence since 1991, with the church claiming that two-thirds of Russia''s 144 (m) million people are observant.
