Prof Lynette Chua (National University of Singapore) discusses her recent book The Politics of Rights and Southeast Asia, which was published in 2022 by Cambridge University Press. Grounded in the socio-legal study of politics of rights as a theoretical framework, the book explores how rights emerge from being put into action or mobilized in collective action in Southeast Asia.

Lynette Chua is Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore, with a joint appointment at Yale-NUS as Rector of Elm College and Head of Studies for the Double-Degree Programme in Law and Liberal Arts. She is also President of the Asian Law & Society Association (2022-23). Her work focuses on legal mobilisation, legal consciousness, and rights, power, and resistance. She is the author of Mobilizing Gay Singapore: Rights and Resistance in an Authoritarian State (Temple University Press, 2014), The Politics of Love in Myanmar: LGBT Mobilization and Human Rights as a Way of Life (Stanford University Press, 2018), and The Politics of Rights and Southeast Asia (Cambridge University Press 2022).

Srila Roy is a professor of sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her long-standing research interests and expertise is in the field of transnational and decolonial feminist studies. She is the author of Remembering Revolution: Gender, Violence, and Subjectivity in India's Naxalbari Movement (Oxford University Press, 2012) and Changing the Subject: Feminist and Queer Politics in Neoliberal India (Duke University Press, 2022). She has edited and co-edited the volumes New South Asian Feminisms: Paradoxes and Possibilities (Zed Books, 2012), New Subaltern Politics: Reconceptualizing Hegemony and Resistance in Contemporary India (Oxford University Press, 2015) and Intimacy and injury: In the wake of #MeToo in India and South Africa (Manchester University Press, 2022).
