The original Novation Supernova was released in the late 90s and the Novation Supernova 2 followed in the early 2000s. The Novation Supernova II is a classic digital synth featuring ASM (analog sound modeling) and comes in 24-voices (standard), 36-voices (Supernova II PRO), and 48-voices (Supernova II PRO-X) versions.

The Novation Supernova 2 features 3 oscillators (saw, square) with morphing to triangle & sine, double saw, noise (white, pink), ring modulation and FM. It also has a filter with 12db, 18db and 24 db slopes, overdrive, Q Norm, and supports resonant LPF, BPF, HPF, Notch filter types and 5 additional Dual filter modes (LPF + LPF, BPF + BPF, HPF + HPF, LPF + BPF, & BPF + LPF) with frequency separation for a lot of sound shaping options.

In addition, the Novation Supernova II has 2 LFOs (tri, saw, square, S&H) each with 3 speed settings (slow, normal, fast) for audio-rate modulation of various parameters. On top of this it supports external audio input (routable to filter, effects or vocoder), has a 42-band vocoder, is 8-part multimbral, and has 8 audio outputs.

The Novation Supernova 2's effects section is very comprehensive, supporting up to 7 simultaneous effects for each of the 8 multi-timbral parts. The effects are: Delay, Chorus (Phaser/Flanger/Chorus/Quad Chorus/Ensemble/Rotary Speaker), Reverb, EQ, Pan, Distortion, Comb Filter.

The Novation Supernova 2 also supports 19 (!) different effects routings: parallel, series, and parallel + series effects. This makes it exceptionally powerful in this area, even surpassing the FX routing options on the newer Novation Peak and Summit.

The Novation Supernova 2 also has a mod matrix in the oscillator and filter sections (5 sources, 5 destinations), and ultimately supports up to 130 modulation routings in total. In addition, it has a very deep arpeggiator with transpose, patterns, gate, speed, octave, chord and other parameters -- including the ability to create and save custom arpeggiator patterns (with rests, velocity etc) as a sequencer pattern of up to 64 steps.

The Novation Supernova 2 supports up to 1024 patches and 256 performances in multimbral use, has a 61-key velocity and aftertouch keyboard, and has MIDI In / Out / Thru connections. It is well suited to both sound design and live performance use thanks to the 8-part multi-timbral capabilities.

The Novation Supernova 2 was designed by Chris Huggett, a legendary synth designer who is sadly no longer with us. The team at Novation really put their all into this instrument, and it's still incredibly powerful and versatile decades later. I believe much of the Novation Peak and Summit's heritage can be traced back to this synth, and even the OSCar before it (dual filters, filter separation etc).

It is capable of creating a variety of sounds including big basses, ripping leads, lush evolving pads, keys, organs, FM tones and weird ambient textures. It's feature packed and built from the ground up to be easy to use, create and play sounds and performances with.

If you are a fan of late 90s / early 2000 digital virtual analog synthesizers and multi-timbral capabilities, the Novation Supernova II is a great choice and remains a classic virtual analog digital synth which is still relevant today. If you have the chance to pick one up, you won't be disappointed.
