In today’s video, I am sharing my husband and I decision to open up about an important and often deeply personal decision many adoptive families face, whether or not to change their child's name after adoption. We adopted 6 of our children from foster care and it was a very hard decision on what to do that would be the best for each one of them. A name is very important for sure.

For us, the answer was clear — we chose not to change our children’s first names. Their names are part of their story, their identity, and their history. We wanted to honor who they were before they joined our family, not erase it. we chose to give them an option for their middle names. We wanted them to also have that connection with our family too.

Every child comes with a name that connects them to their past — to their biological family, their culture, and their beginnings. While every family is different and there’s no “one right answer,” this was the decision that felt most respectful, loving, and right for our children.
