The main squares of St. Petersburg have been formed over the centuries, they have been repeatedly renamed and rebuilt. St. Isaac's Square is no exception. Initially, the area behind Senate Square housed shopping arcades, which is why this area was called Trade Square. After the construction of the Mariinsky Palace in 1849, the square was called Mariinskaya.

During the reign of Catherine II, a decree was issued on the construction of a new St. Isaac's Church. Initially, the temple was located on the neighboring Senate Square, but due to the fragile foundation, it was decided to rebuild the church and move it further from the Neva. After the construction of the temple, the square was landscaped. However, the square received the name "St. Isaac's" only in 1793.

Later, the square was expanded and a monument to Nicholas I was erected in its center, which is why it was decided to change the name to Nikolaevskaya Square. But the new name did not catch on and soon disappeared from official documents. In 1923, the square was named after the revolutionary V. V. Vorovsky. Only in 1944, St. Isaac's Square regained its old name.
