Our presentation will discuss a recent collaboration between an Honors course and the Special Collections Research Center’s University Archives. This partnership included eight dedicated sessions in the archives, where students had the opportunity to engage directly with historical records. The students first learned essential lessons about archival principles (archives 101), which fostered excitement and anticipation for their research activities. Then they learned about the preservation, handling, storage, and the entire lifecycle of archival materials, which helped students understand how items become accessible and usable. Throughout the course, students also developed skills in archival research, conducting oral histories, and creating online exhibits using Omeka. This experience successfully engaged students with university archives records, and we are looking forward to a second iteration in the fall. The hope in discussing our work is to get feedback and ideas from others doing similar things!
