Описание к видео 1875: Dublin Streets Flooded With Whiskey (The Disaster That Followed)

Great Whiskey Fire Dublin 1875 | 13 people died drinking whiskey from streets | Chamber Street fire disaster | Irish whiskey history tragedy

In 1875, a warehouse fire in Dublin flooded the streets with 5,000 barrels of whiskey—and 13 people died not from the fire, but from drinking the whiskey flowing through the gutters. This is the bizarre true story of the Great Whiskey Fire of 1875, where rivers of burning whiskey ran through Dublin streets and people couldn't resist drinking it, leading to deaths from alcohol poisoning during a disaster.

Timeline:
0:00 - 1875: Warehouse explodes, whiskey floods Dublin streets

1:00 - 13 deaths—all from alcohol poisoning, zero from fire
1:15 - Victims absorbed whiskey through skin while rolling in it
1:30 - "Death by good fortune" - killed by free whiskey

What Happened - June 18, 1875:
A bonded warehouse on Chamber Street in Dublin's Liberties neighborhood caught fire around 8 PM. The warehouse stored thousands of barrels of aging whiskey for export. When flames reached the barrels, they exploded, sending 5,000 barrels worth of whiskey pouring into the streets.
Rivers of burning whiskey up to 2 inches deep flowed downhill through cobblestone streets, flames running along gutters like liquid fire, setting buildings ablaze as it spread.

The Deadly Response:
Instead of fleeing, crowds rushed toward the burning whiskey with pots, pans, cups, boots—anything that could hold liquid—and started drinking it directly from the streets. Hundreds of people lay in gutters scooping flaming whiskey with cupped hands and drinking it immediately.
Firefighters trying to extinguish the blaze were blocked by masses of drunk people fighting over whiskey puddles. Some were drinking whiskey that was still on fire.

The Death Toll:
By morning, 13 people were dead—zero from burns or smoke inhalation, all from acute alcohol poisoning. They drank so much raw whiskey so fast their bodies shut down. Dozens more hospitalized with severe alcohol poisoning and burns from drinking burning liquid.
The Dublin Fire Brigade reported the biggest challenge wasn't the fire—it was drunk crowds blocking streets making firefighting impossible.

The Inquest:
Doctors confirmed every death was from "intoxication by whiskey absorbed through the mouth and skin." Some victims rolled in whiskey puddles and absorbed lethal amounts through their skin.
Darkest irony: The whiskey was in a bonded warehouse (locked, untaxed). People literally died drinking tax-free illegal whiskey off the street during a disaster.

The Legacy:
The Great Whiskey Fire became infamous across Europe as the only fatal fire where flames killed nobody—free alcohol did. Dublin newspapers called it "death by good fortune" (died from what seemed like a blessing).

A plaque marks the site: "The Liberties Whiskey Fire 1875" but doesn't mention people died drinking from streets—simultaneously the most Dublin thing ever and too dark for a memorial.

Historical Context:
This happened during Ireland's whiskey golden age when Irish whiskey outsold Scotch globally. Dublin had dozens of distilleries. The Liberties was a working-class neighborhood where whiskey was expensive and taxed—free whiskey flooding streets seemed like a miracle until it became a mass casualty event.
