The midwestern United States is at high risk for flooding, erosion, and reduced water quality as climate change progresses. Stormwater basins can help mitigate these risks. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is a regional planning agency for northeastern Illinois focused on sustainable growth and resilience. CMAP is establishing northeastern Illinois' first comprehensive stormwater infrastructure inventory, enhancing regional flood prevention and erosion mitigation capabilities.

Data Science Clinic students Collin Kim, Mohit Kumar Sathishkumar, Xiaoyue Wei, and Anna Poon are developing a deep learning model using labeled stormwater storage data from Kane county. They are training the model to identify stormwater infrastructure in regions lacking detailed stormwater storage data like Cook County. The goal is to create a scalable tool to assist and complement manual survey efforts.

Applied experiential learning is a core component of the DSI educational mission. The Data Science Clinic provides students with projects that transcend the traditional classroom experience. The Clinic is a project-based course where students work in teams as data scientists with real-world clients under the supervision of mentor instructors. To do this we partner with industry, social impact, civic organizations and research groups for 1 or 2 academic quarters on data science projects. As part of their training, students will be tasked with producing key deliverables, such as data analysis, open source software, as well as final client presentations and research reports.
