Gion Festival Mikoshi Arai

This is a ceremony to purify the mikoshi after the Gion Festival Kankosai and before storing it in the storehouse. Of the three mikoshi, Nakamiza Mikoshi, Higashimiza Mikoshi, and Nishimiza Mikoshi, Nakamiza Mikoshi is the representative to be purified in the Mikoshi Arai.
A large torch is used to purify the road from Yasaka Shrine to Shijo Ohashi Bridge, after which the fire of the large torch is transferred to four small torches, which surround the front and back of the Nakamiza Mikoshi. The Nakamiza Mikoshi surrounded by small torches is carried from Yasaka Shrine to the top of Shijo Ohashi Bridge, where it is purified by water pumped from the Kamo River during the morning Shinyosui Seiharai ceremony, which is sprinkled on it by sakaki branches. It is also said that bathing in the water sprinkled on it by sakaki branches will ward off evil.

At around 8:30 pm, the mikoshi will be returned to Yasaka Shrine and placed in the storehouse.

After that Lantern with Maiko and Geisha has parade around Gion Area.
