The metaphor of robots as slaves has a long history in our popular culture (e.g. Star Wars, Blade Runner). As real-world artificial intelligence advances, is there a danger that we will mistreat sentient beings? Is the metaphor of slavery appropriate and useful in this entirely different context?

We discuss with Dr. Dexter Gabriel, a historian of slavery and resistance, a scholar of depictions of slavery on film, and, as P. Djèlí Clark, the author of speculative fiction featuring automatons approaching sentience.

Works discussed include The Animatrix, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049, Master of Djinn.
