STORYLINE:

A suspect in a grisly slaying in England who was caught in Central Park in New York won't fight extradition to his homeland to face murder charges, his defence attorney says.

A U-S magistrate ordered 27-year-old Richard Markham to be held without bail until another hearing on June 13. It isn't clear how long extradition will take.

Law enforcement sources claim Markham told U-S investigators he killed the victim during a drunken dispute before chopping up the body. He made the admission following his arrest on Wednesday, the sources said.

Markham is said to have voluntarily recounted the gruesome slaying and his botched attempt to cover his tracks. Central Park patrolmen caught him after two unidentified female tourists spotted him reading a newspaper on a park bench and, recognising him from a newspaper photo, alerted police.

During his arrest, Markham gave his real name and then lifted his shirt to show a tattoo near his navel reading: "Made in England," police said.

Markham was carrying copies of newspapers featuring pictures of him and stories describing his tattoo and flight to New York, police said. Investigators believe he had been staying at a midtown hotel - ticket stubs for the movie 'Spiderman' and a museum were found in his pockets.

Markham is wanted in connection with last week's murder of 25-year-old Tristian Lovelock in Hampshire, England. Lovelock's severed head was discovered on Friday by a dog walker at a park in Basingstoke, southwest of London. Police later found human remains strewn in and around a nearby housing estate before discovering one of Lovelock's arms cooking in a baking pan in Markham's house.

Lovelock was last seen May 30 drinking with Markham, the son of a former British army major, at a house in another part of Basingstoke. An autopsy found that the victim died from head injuries caused by a blunt object.

In his alleged confession, Markham told police that he had wanted to flee to Amsterdam but decided on New York because the air fare was cheaper and arrived in the city on Friday. The suspect allegedly claimed he became enraged when, while drinking with Lovelock, the victim cut him with a bayonet.

When Markham realised Lovelock was dead, he cut up the body and tried to dispose of the parts outside, he allegedly told police. He explained he discovered that he had accidentally left Lovelock's arm behind and tried to get rid of it by cooking it, police said.

British authorities have charged Markham with murder and "conspiracy to prevent the lawful and decent burial of a dead body without lawful excuse," court papers said.
