The room was buzzing as I introduced a drinks hamper that could’ve stocked a five-star minibar: two bottles each of Langham Culver, Kriekbult Pinotage, Olmeca Tequila, Diplomático Rum, Whispering Angel, and Jack Daniels. I kicked things off at £300, and the bids came in hot. £320… £340… £350.

Then I noticed something — the two fiercest bidders were sitting at the same table. Their eyes avoided each other, faces frozen in polite tension. You could almost hear their inner thoughts: Do I really want to destroy Dave’s budget over a bottle of tequila?

This is where being a charity auctioneer becomes an art form. It’s not just about getting the highest number — it’s about reading the room, feeling the rhythm, and knowing when to break the rules.

So I leaned in, smiled, and said, “Tell you what — I’ll make you both happy. You can each have one for £325.”
