Kanturk was the ancient capital of the Barony of Duhallow in north County Cork. The name 'Kanturk' comes from the Irish 'Céann Tuirc' which means boar's head.
The castle was built around 1601 for MacDonagh MacCarthy, Lord of Duhallow, as a defence against the English Settlers. It was a tudor style mansion four storeys high, 28 metres in length and 11 metres wide. Each tower had five storeys and rose to a height of 29 metres. It was constructed of rubble limestone from the quarry which lies just north of the castle.

The castle was never completed.

Kanturk Castle is unique as it was the last castle in Ireland to be owned by the English National Trust. It was handed over to An Taisce in 2000, President Mary McAleese attended the ceremony at the castle to accept the deeds on behalf of the Irish people.

Spain had been at war with England in what is known as the Anglo-Spanish War 1585-1604. After Kinsale, Spain signed a peace treaty with England, which ended the war.

L'Espagne avait été en guerre avec l'Angleterre dans ce qu'on appelle la guerre anglo-espagnole 1585-1604. Après Kinsale, l'Espagne a signé un traité de paix avec l'Angleterre, qui a mis fin à la guerre.
