How To Fit A Camper Van Roof Vent | Thule Omnivent Fitting Guide | DIY Camper Conversion | 006

In this Transit Camper Conversion episode, I installed a Thule Omnivent Roof Vent with a fan into the roof of my Transit Minibus.

Here's what I used in this video:
Thule Omnivent: https://ebay.us/B9dgmg
Mastic tape: https://ebay.us/y6hZXt
Sikaflex 522 Sealant: https://ebay.us/Pae2s2

It can get very stuffy in a campervan, especially when you are sleeping or in there for a long time. The accepted wisdom is to put in roof vents so that the warm air can escape upwards. To help this a fan is usually installed in the vent.

I managed to find a second hand Thule Omnivent for half price, but I would have bought a new one if I hadn’t been that lucky.

Cutting the hole is very nerve-racking. You need to make sure that it is square, as well as in the right place. But taking our time and using Pythagoras we did it fine. We used an air saw, mainly because it was easily to hand, but a jigsaw would have been fine.

To clamp the vent in place we made a framework out of 36mm by 24mm timber. Better woodworkers than us would have made it perfectly, but our effort worked very well. We just needed to make sure it was square before tightening the clamps to the vent.

Because the roof was uneven we needed to use Mastic Tape to make an even surface for the vent to sit on. We then used Sikaflex 522 adhesive sealer to complete the waterproofing.

To test the van we used some existing wiring, but when we complete the wiring of the van we will run it from the leisure battery system.
