नवरात्रि के सातवें दिन दुर्गा मां के कालरात्रि रूप की पूजा की जाती है।यहां पर काल का अर्थ मृत्यु से है जबकि रत्रि का अर्थ अंधकार अथवा अज्ञानता से है। अतः माँ कालरात्रि अंधकार की मृत्यु लाती है या अज्ञानता का नाश करती है। कालरात्रि मां को कालिका देवी अर्थात काली माता के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।
माँ कालरात्रि दुर्गा का सबसे भयंकर रूप हैं। कालरात्रि रूप में उसका रंग गहरा है ।माँ कालरात्रि के गले में विद्युत की माला और बाल बिखरे हुए हैं ।उसका हार रात में चंद्रमा की तरह चमकता है।माँ कालरात्रि के चार हाथ हैं और उनका एक हाथ वर मुद्रा में है जिससे वह भक्तों को आशीर्वाद देती हैं, दूसरा हाथ अभय मुद्रा में है, जिससे माँ कालरात्रि सब की रक्षा करती हैं, तीसरे हाथ में उन्होंने वज्र पकड़ा हुआ है, तथा चौथे हाथ में नुकीला कांटा है।। उसकी तीन आंखें हैं और जब वह सांस लेती है तो नाक से लपटें निकलती हैं। कालरात्रि मां की सवारी गधा है। माँ कालरात्रि को शुभंकरी भी कहा जाता है क्योंकि वह हमेशा अपने भक्तों को शुभ फल प्रदान करती है। मां को प्रसन्न कर भक्त अपनी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण कर सकते हैं. जिस व्यक्ति का अपने क्रोध पर वर्ष ना हो वह मां कालरात्रि की पूजा करके अपने क्रोध पर विजय प्राप्त कर सकते है. नवरात्रि का सातवां दिन तांत्र‍िक क्रिया की साधना करने वाले लोगों के लिए बेहद महत्‍वपूर्ण है. इस दिन तंत्र साधना करने वाले साधक आधी रात में देवी की तांत्रिक विधि से पूजा करते हैं. इस दिन मां की आंखें खुलती हैं. कुंडलिनी जागरण के लिए जो साधक साधना में लगे होते हैं महा सप्‍तमी के दिन सहस्त्रसार चक्र का भेदन करते हैं.सहस्रार चक्र सिर के शिखर पर स्थित है।सहस्रार चक्र में एक महत्त्वपूर्ण शक्ति - मेधा शक्ति है। जो मस्तिष्क की प्रक्रियाओं जैसे स्मरण शक्ति, एकाग्रता और बुद्धि को प्रभावित करता है। दुर्गा के माँ कालरात्रि रूप के पीछे कुछ रोचक कहानियां हैं।
