Temperatures have risen above freezing so we have switched from heated buckets to our larger summer stock tank for our new rescues.

Our Quarantine Paddock is not on our property, and we are blessed that a local retired farming family has allowed us to use their fields. They even make sure the residents of the QT paddock have fresh water for us inbetween our visits to feed twice daily.

Instead of walking over to the stock tank / water trough to check on water level, they used an old farming trick we wanted to share.

A bright colored ball floating in the water allows you to visually see from a distance if they need more water. If the ball is out of sight they turn on the hose to fill the tank, once the ball is visible they turn off the water. This also helps from over filling and wasting water.

It's a simple trick that has really helped ensure the water is always full and never over full and running over the sides of the tank when filling!

This floating ball also helps if temps dip down and thin ice forms. The ball moving with the breeze keeps surface tension forming and makes the water freeze slower than without it. If it does freeze, the Donkeys learn to push the ball down of out of the way to get to the fresh water. We were able to use this waterer well into December in Upstate NY because of this. Once temps really dropped low for extended periods we had to switch the to heated buckets in their barn.
