He will outline how autistic people often have to seek support for their mental health. That there is a much higher change that autistic people will experience mental health issues, especially school-age autistic children, but also autistic adults. What he has found is that when autistic people approach the Mental Health services, they are seen as disordered and broken and that there is something wrong with them. So how we get the right support for our child? Distress seems to be taken a given. Your child is Autistic, therefore that explains the distress. But it is not part of the diagnostic criteria. Distress is not part of being Autistic. It is the environment that does not fit the Autistic person, that then causes the distress. If we can change the lens, then we can discover the root of the issue.
