STORYLINE

The chief UN inspectors landed in Larnaca, Cyprus, on Monday after weekend meetings in Baghdad that were a prelude to crucial reports they must file with the UN Security Council on Friday.

After their talks, the inspectors said they sensed a "good beginning" and a changed "positive attitude" in Baghdad toward their job of ensuring Iraq is free of banned arms.

The Iraqis gave the inspectors more documents to try to clarify lingering questions about 1980s chemical and biological arms and said they would establish commissions to search for additional documents and leftover arms.

Hans Blix noted "some positive attitude" from Baghdad and UN nuclear watchdog Mohamed ElBaradei said he felt "cautious optimism".

In their two days of talks in Baghdad, however, Blix and ElBaradei did not win immediate agreement, as expected, for U-2 reconnaissance flights over Iraq.
