If you have a sagging door and the door is rubbing the frame or the door won't shut, what can you do to fix it? In this video we give you two simple ways to fix a sagging door. This video focuses on doors that have dropped on the door latch side. That is, the door latch side is lower than the door hinge side.

How can you spot a sagging door? Look at the horizontal gap at the top of the door. A door that is sagging on the door latch side will have a wider gap at the top on the door latch side and a smaller gap at the top on the door hinge side.

It is also identifiable by the vertical gap on the door latch side. The gap will often be smaller at the top and wider at the bottom of the door.

When my house settled, my front door started rubbing on the top right corner of the frame. But a sagging door may also rub against the frame at the bottom of the door (rubbing on the threshold). The solution is the same for doors rubbing at the top and at the bottom.

You can adjust a sagging door easily using one of two methods: by putting longer screws into the top door hinge or by adjusting the door hinges.

The easiest and best solution to fix a door that is hitting the frame at the top side of the door or a door that is rubbing against the threshold is to install 3" inch screws into the top door hinge.

This will suck the door on the hinge side into the 2X4 framing and fix the tilt of a door that his hitting or rubbing on the top corner of the frame or a door that is rubbing on the bottom of the frame.

Another simple fix, if the longer screws don't work, is to adjust the door hinges. By adjusting the top door hinge you can pull the door closer to the hinge side of the frame. You can adjust the hinge by using pliers, channel locks, or a crescent wrench. The crescent wrench is often the best tool to adjust a door hinge, but the others will work if you don't mind a little more scuffing on the hinge.

When these ways to fix a sagging door have been done correctly, the vertical and horizontal gaps on the door should be seen to be more consistent.

If your door is rubbing against the frame on the latch side, no matter where it is rubbing, adjusting all the door latches to pull the door towards the door latch side will fix that issue too.
