In this video, we discuss an extremely important question for every wheat farmer: How long should we allow the wheat crop to keep making new tillers? Many farmers get confused about when tillering should stop and when the crop should shift fully towards stem elongation and ear formation. Understanding this stage properly can make a big difference in final yield.

Tillering is the foundation of wheat yield because every healthy productive tiller has the potential to produce one ear. In Pakistan, the ideal tillering period is usually from 20 to 45 days after sowing, depending on variety, temperature, and sowing time. During this period, the crop should be encouraged to make strong, healthy tillers through balanced nitrogen, proper irrigation, and good sunlight.

After about 45–50 days, wheat should naturally start reducing new tiller formation and focus on strengthening existing tillers. If the crop keeps producing late, weak tillers beyond this stage, they usually do not form proper ears and only waste nutrients. This is why farmers should avoid excess nitrogen and unnecessary irrigations after the optimum tillering phase.

We also explain how temperature and weather control tillering. Cool but sunny weather promotes strong tiller formation, while foggy and very cold conditions slow it down. That is why timing of first irrigation and urea application is so critical — to support tillering early, not late.
