The Mercedes GLE lineup has been freshened with the addition of the new 400e plug-in hybrid model for 2024. Combining a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and 31.2 kWh battery pack, the GLE 400e promises fuel-sipping economy and electric driving range. However, this high-end plug-in hybrid SUV struggles to find its footing among talented rivals.

Potent On Paper, Average In Reality
On paper, the GLE 400e's powertrain specs seem promising with a stout 375 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque from the hybrid system. Mercedes also touts an electric-only driving range of around 60 miles - competitive for the segment. But the GLE doesn't quite live up to its potential.

Efficiency is middling at best, with the GLE returning disappointing economy compared to plug-in hybrid X5 and Cayenne competitors that have smaller battery packs. Straight-line performance is adequate but unexceptional, with the GLE 400e taking 6.1 seconds to hit 60 mph - over a second slower than the BMW X5 xDrive50e.
The GLE's throaty four-cylinder engine note is uncouth compared to the X5's smoother inline-six. Transitions between gas and electric power are well-managed but the Mercedes powertrain lacks refinement overall.

Quick Charging For The Affluent
One potential advantage for the GLE 400e is its ability to rapidly charge at up to 60 kW from a DC fast charger. This allows an impressively quick 20-minute 10-80 percent recharge time. However, most buyers in this price range likely have home charging available, making DC quick charging more of a novelty than a necessity.

Spacious But Dated Cabin
Inside, the GLE 400e delivers a spacious cabin with excellent second-row legroom and a large 630L cargo area. But the interior design and material quality trail newer competitors, with an aging dual-screen setup and some lower-rent plastic trim.
Handling is secure but uninspiring, with the portly GLE's 2,645 kg curb weight hampering agility. The ride is comfortable thanks to air suspension, but sloppy body motions reveal the GLE's mass during spirited driving.

Should You Buy One?
With a starting price of $82,255, the GLE 400e undercuts plug-in hybrid competitors from BMW and Porsche by a few thousand dollars. But the X5 xDrive50e and Cayenne E-Hybrid offer superior powertrain refinement, better chassis dynamics, and more modern, upscale cabins.

The Mercedes makes a strong case for buyers that prioritize rapid DC charging ability over all else. But for most luxury plug-in hybrid SUV buyers, the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne are more compelling all-around choices despite costing a bit more. The flawed GLE 400e struggles to find its place among this talented field.
