STORYLINE:
A small group of women chanted “ordain women” and held up signs reading “women priests now” a short distance from where Pope Francis is presiding over a historic Vatican meeting on the future of the Catholic Church.

The women are part of a group of advocates from the Women’s Ordination Conference that has pushed for a greater role for women in the Church.

Women have long complained they are treated as second-class citizens in the church, barred from the priesthood and highest ranks of power yet responsible for the lion’s share of its work teaching in Catholic schools, running Catholic hospitals and passing the faith down to next generations.

They have long demanded a greater say in church governance, up to and including priestly ordination, but have often been shut down by the male-dominated hierarchy.

The 3-week-long synod, which began Wednesday, is the culmination of an unprecedented two-year canvasing of rank-and-file Catholics about their hopes for the future of the institution, including on such hot-button issues as women, LGBTQ+ Catholics and priestly celibacy.

The potential that this synod, and a second session next year, could lead to real change on previously taboo topics has given hope to many women and progressive Catholics.
