Galway native, Sara Noone penned the initial lyrics after watching Charlie Bird on the Late Late Show back in January. Having first-hand experience of Motor Neurones Disease, her mother Maureen was diagnosed a few years ago, she was so touched and inspired by Charlie’s openness and honesty.
She then contacted well-known singer Michael English, who composed & arranged the song resulting in this tribute to Charlie. The song features The RTÉ Concert Orchestra and some of Charlie’s friends and colleagues from RTÉ, who have all come together to support the Climb With Charlie campaign. The nationwide campaign is an initiative that will see former RTÉ journalist Charlie Bird, who is battling Motor Neurone Disease, and a host of household names, friends and family climb Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo along with over 100 other climbs around the country on April 2nd with the aim of recognizing the huge physical and emotional mountains many people face in daily life.
100% of the royalties and funds raised by downloading the song are being donated to two wonderful charities on a fifty-fifty split between the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.Commenting on the song, Charlie Bird said: "What an amazing song – it really captures the positive energy and reaching out the hand of friendship that this campaign is all about. Thank you to everyone who was part of it and all my friends and colleagues and particularly to Michael and Sara for making it happen.”"I want to encourage everyone to log on to www.climbwithcharlie.ie and donate what they can, buy the song and set up their own fundraisers to climb in their local area, be it climbing a set of stairs or a short walk around the house, around a local park, a walk to the beach. Whatever you are able to do.
