VOYAGER 1

Mission Overview

Voyager 1 launched on September 5, 1977, about 16 days after its twin, Voyager 2, but took a faster trajectory to reach Jupiter first in 1979 and Saturn in 1980. It studied Jupiter's turbulent atmosphere, Great Red Spot, Io's volcanoes, and Saturn's rings and moons like Titan. The probe carries 11 instruments for imaging, spectroscopy, and particle detection, powered by radioisotope generators.

Current Status

It crossed the heliopause into interstellar space on August 25, 2012, becoming the first human-made object to do so, at speeds around 17 km/s. As of early 2026, it's over 24 billion km from Earth, approaching one light-day distance by late 2026, with signals taking about 24 hours one-way. NASA restored communications in 2024 after glitches, and it continues sending data via the Deep Space Network.
