Runways at Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, New York, were temporarily closed for about an hour on the night of 13 December due to drone activity in the vicinity. In response, Governor Kathy Hochul urged Congress to strengthen drone oversight by passing the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act. This legislation would expand the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) authority and enable state and local agencies to implement counter-drone measures.

Hochul highlighted the increasing frequency of drone incidents near critical infrastructure, calling for immediate federal intervention to mitigate risks. She also requested additional federal law enforcement support to protect sensitive areas while emphasising the urgency of regulating drones before further crises occur.
