Highlights of a debate held on Sunday 17 May 2015 at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. This was the first in a series of supporting discussions bringing together a variety of expert speakers and commentators to discuss issues and topics raised by our summer season of plays, including The Merchant of Venice, Othello and The Jew of Malta.

The arts are influenced by culture, but they can also create change in that culture. Creative people live and work within the society which they also question and examine. As we opened our new season of plays, programmed around the idea of the 'outsider', we discussed whether our society is accurately represented in our cultural scene. Are the arts in Britain questioning the status quo, and how?

Introduced by RSC Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman and featuring guest speakers; Kerry Michael, Amerah Saleh, Jenny Sealey and Susan Stockwell
