This game is hard, at least with the restrictions I’m playing with (monotype (pre-evos like Larvitar allowed), set mode, no items except held, level caps for each gym, the number of mons in gym leader battles is limited by the number the gym leader uses). And it’s not even in its second hardest difficulty.

The first run I attempted was an ice monotype, but I didn’t make it past the second gym. I had no evolved mons iirc (tried mining an ice stone for alolan sandshrew, but no luck), ice isn’t known for being a good type defensively, and the gym’s gimmick on top of having evolved mons made things too difficult.

As for this mono dark run: The fog on the first gym actually worked in my favor. The gifted Stunky carried the team for the earliest parts of the game. The second gym nearly ended this run, but having access to evolved mons like Houndoom and Honchkrow (got a dusk stone from the mining minigame, he’s been carrying the team since) really helped. The third gym was tough, but not as bad as the second as I was able to find a solution relatively quickly.
