One of the most eerie visual sequences I've ever had the pleasure to view. I was 11 when I first saw it in the theater in '79. It was the first original Star Trek movie I'd seen AT the time of it's release, having become a lifelong fan from the cartoons and reruns of the original previously to STTMP Jerry Goldsmith's score was wonderful :)
