Here we show in step-by-step detail how to build a sturdy, air sealed, well insulated attic hatch around an existing pull down ladder. The result will be a hatch access for your attic ladder that is air tight, highly durable, and well insulated. Most homes do not have an insulated and air tight attic hatch. This is a major energy loss point that also allows copious heat gain during the summer and heat loss from the home during the winter. Having an insulated attic hatch that is also air tight is one of the biggest improvements that many homes can make. We often see hatch covers that are zippered and have maybe an inch of fiberglass in them. If that's all that you can do it is much better than nothing, but those types of insulated hatch covers are not air tight, they are not as insulated, and they typically do not last as long. If you are able to follow the directions in this video, you will have a sturdy, well insulated, well air sealed, and robust hatch cover that will take a beating for years.
