FTIR stands for Fourier Transform Infrared. FTIR spectroscopy is a type of IR spectroscopy used for identification of functional groups in molecules like Alcohol, Amide, Carbonyl, Benzene, Acyl chloride, Nitrile, Sulfide etc. in solid, powder, liquid and gaseous sample. Infrared radiation is used as a source. In this FTIR spectroscopy optical interferometer is there which produces interferogram. Fourier Transformation is applied on interferogram and produce spectrum.
In order to study a sample, an interferogram is recorded first in absence of sample. Then interferogram of the radiation in presence of sample. These interferograms are then converted into spectrums. Form this spectrums it is detected which wavelength radiation is absorbed by the sample.
In this tutorial i have discussed on basic principle of operation of FTIR spectroscopy. Different parts of FTIR spectrometer and their functions, difference between dispersion type and FTIR type of spectroscopy.
