International Discussion “Not Alone: The Power of Community for Women Affected by War” Took Place on July 16

On July 16, an international panel discussion titled “Not Alone: The Power of Community for Women Affected by War” brought together Ukrainian and global voices to spotlight the urgent needs of women who have survived missile and drone attacks and are living with life-changing injuries.

The event marked the first open conversation of its kind intentionally aimed at an international audience. It centered on the real-life story of 21-year-old Alyona Palamarchuk, a civilian from Kyiv who was severely wounded in a Shahed drone strike. Her life was saved through hospital treatment, including the use of VAC (negative pressure wound) therapy, yet full recovery remains out of reach. Her story served as both a powerful testimony and a call to action.

Key issues discussed included:

The systemic lack of access to rehabilitation and recovery for Ukrainian women with war-related injuries
The life-saving potential of VAC therapy and the urgent need to scale it across Ukraine

How international partners can support — without replacing — local efforts

Organizers stressed that international engagement is essential for providing meaningful, immediate support — and that building transnational partnerships is the only way to offer injured women a real chance at recovery and renewal.

The event also served as a platform to make a reasoned appeal to global foundations and corporate donors, with follow-up conversations planned with Ukrainian businesses and government stakeholders.

This discussion was just the beginning — a first step toward building a sustainable, cross-border coalition to ensure that women affected by war are not left behind.
