SHAEF approved a bold plan by Field Marshall Montgomeryt o capitalise on the post normandy breakout momentum and end the war by Christmas. It was called Operation Market Garden and the pressure was on to make it happen..

…Allied airborne troops were to capture the bridges ,then ground troops would charge NORTH over the Rivers and roads of the netherlands, , around the Siegfried line into Germany’s industrial heartland.
BUT Would This daring plan work, and was it worth the risk? and as Polish General Sosaboski remarked, ‘what about the germans?’

The heroic exploits of allied paratroopers, tankers and infantry to achieve this aim was the stuff of legends. But it was not quite as portrayed in the film, A Bridge Too Far.
