பாளையங்கோட்டை சிவன் கோவில் தெப்பத்திருவிழா Palayamkottai Sivan Kovil theppa thiruvizha

Located in the central part of Palayangottai town in Tirunelveli city, Palayamkottai Gomati Ambal Udanurai Tripurantheeswarar Temple.

This temple which was given as Senpakaranyam in Puranic times is now popularly known as Palayangottai Shiva Temple.

In earlier times, a king named Utthalan ruled this region under the boundaries of the Pandya kingdom very well. One day he was walking along the river with his wife. On the way he ridiculed a sage who was engaged in penance, disrespecting him because of his arrogance. The sage cursed the king because of this. As a result of that curse, the king's physical appearance is disfigured and the sight of his eyes is lost.

The king, who felt sorry for this, realized his mistake and begged for salvation in various ways about the sage's Thiruvadis. Delighted by him, the sage blesses him by consecrating a Shiva lingam in the Chenpaka forest on the banks of the river Tamirabarani and worshiping him properly, saying that his curse will be removed and he will regain his old form and eyesight.

Accordingly, he came to the Red Forest on the banks of the river Tamirabarani, where Sage Gautama was doing penance. Sage Gautama came to know the situation of the king who was bowing down to him through his wisdom. At that time Hanuman, the son of Vayu, was floating in the sky towards the north, and the sage called him and told him that he wanted a Shiva lingam to worship, so he should go to Kashi and bring a Shiva lingam. Accordingly, in the twinkling of an eye, Vayu traveled through the air and went to Kashi, brought a Shivalinga and presented it to Sage Gautama. Sage Gautama, who received the Shivlingam, consecrated it in this place called Senpaka Forest and seated the king and made him do pujas in the proper manner. As a result, Lord Shiva appeared before them and removed the king's curse and restored him with the luster of his appearance and his lost eyesight. The history of this temple says that at that time Sage Gautama, who appeared here, prayed that they should always wake up here and solve the woes of the devotees who worship them, and that Lord Shiva should be the same.

புராண காலத்தில் செண்பகாரண்யம் என்று வழங்கப்பெற்ற இக்கோவில் பாளையங்கோட்டை சிவன் கோவில் என்றே தற்போது பிரபலமாக அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

முற்காலத்தில் பாண்டிய நாட்டின் எல்லைக்கு உட்பட்ட இந்த பகுதியை உத்தாலன் என்னும் மன்னன் மிக சிறப்பாக ஆட்சி செய்து வந்தான். அவன் ஒருநாள் உப்பரிகையில் தனது மனைவியோடு உலா சென்றான். அப்படி செல்லும் வழியில் தவத்தில் ஈடுபட்டு இருந்த முனிவர் ஒருவரை தனது அகந்தை மிகுதியால் மதிக்காமல் ஏளனம் செய்தான். இதனால் வெகுண்ட அந்த முனிவர் மன்னுக்கு சாபமளிக்கிறார். அந்த சாபத்தின் பலனாக மன்னனின் உடல் தோற்றம் உருக்குலைந்து அகோர தோற்றமளிக்க, கண்களின் பார்வையும் பறி போய் விடுகிறது.

இதனால் மனம் வருந்திய மன்னன், தனது தவறை உணர்ந்து முனிவரின் திருவடிகளை பற்றி பலவாறு விமோசனம் கேட்டு மன்றாடினான். அவன் மீது மனமிறங்கிய முனிவர் அவனை தாமிரபரணி நதிக்கரையில் உள்ள செண்பக வனத்தில் சிவலிங்கம் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து முறைப்படி வழிபட்டு வர அவனது சாபம் விலகி பழைய உருவையும், கண் பார்வையையும் பெறலாம் என கூறி விமோசனம் அருளுகிறார்.

அதன்படி தாமிரபரணி நதிக்கரையில் உள்ள செண்பக வனத்திற்கு வர, அங்கு கெளதம முனிவர் என்பவர் தவமியற்றி கொண்டிருந்தார். அவரிடம் சென்று வணங்கி நின்ற மன்னனின் நிலைமையை தன் ஞான திருஷ்டி மூலம் அறிந்து கொள்கிறார் கெளதம முனிவர். அப்போது வானில் வடதிசை நோக்கி வாயு குமாரனான அனுமன் காற்றில் மிதந்தபடி பயணித்து கொண்டு இருக்க, அவரை அழைத்த முனிவர், தான் பூஜிக்க ஓர் சிவலிங்கம் வேண்டும் எனவும் அதனால் காசிக்கு சென்று ஓர் சிவலிங்கம் கொண்டு வரும்படியும் கூறுகிறார். அதன்படி வாயு மைந்தனும் கண் இமைக்கும் நேரத்தில் வான் வழியே சஞ்சரித்து காசிக்கு சென்று ஓர் சிவலிங்கத்தை எடுத்து கொண்டு வந்து கெளதம முனிவரிடம் வழங்கினார். அந்த சிவலிங்கத்தை பெற்ற கெளதம முனிவர் அதனை செண்பக வனம் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்ட இந்த இடத்தில் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து மன்னனை அமர்த்தி முறைப்படி பூஜைகள் செய்ய வைத்து தவமிருக்கச் செய்ததின் பலனாக, சிவபெருமான் அவர்கள் முன் தோன்றி மன்னனின் சாபத்தை நீக்கி அவனுக்கு தோற்றப் பொலிவையும், இழந்த கண் பார்வையையும் திருப்பி அருளுகிறார். அது சமயம் கெளதம முனிவர் இங்கு இப்போது காட்சியளித்த தாங்கள் எப்போதும் இங்கு எழுந்தருளி தங்களை வழிபடும் பக்தர்களின் துயர் தீர்க்க வேண்டும் என வேண்ட, சிவபெருமானும் அப்படியே ஆகட்டும் என்று கூறி வரம் அருளியதாக இக் கோவில் வரலாறு தெரிவிக்கிறது.

கிழக்கு நோக்கிய சன்னதி வாயிலின் இரு பக்கமும் துவார பாலகர்கள் காவல்புரிய, உள்ளே கருவறையில் லிங்கத் திருமேனியராய் காட்சியளிக்கிறார் திரிபுராந்தீசுவரர். இவருக்கு விசேஷ காலத்தில் நாகாபரணம் சாத்தியும், திருக்கண்கள் சாத்தியும், கவசம் சாத்தியும் அலங்காரம் செய்விக்க படுகிறது.
