Congratulations, you've just picked up a simple-to-use, highly capable electronic pipette: the Rainin E4 XLS and XLS+. Press either key to turn it on.

The screen provides a clear readout of what you need to know. The pipetting mode you are in; the time and battery level; the current pipetting action; and the SD card and sound indicators are all shown at the top.

On the left, a tip volume graphic displays tip volume status as you pipette. Settings are on the right. In Basic mode settings include Volume and Speed.

To navigate settings and options and to operate the pipette, use the joystick.

Press Main and joystick to cycle through the 2 levels of modes and other selections. Press the joystick UP to make a selection. You can also press the joystick IN to make a selection.

To adjust settings, joystick right. To modify the value inside a highlighted box, press the joystick in. Left and right move in larger steps. Up and down are finer increments. When a value is correct, press the joystick to set it and move on. You can also press Done. When all values look good, press Done to exit settings.

Tap the joystick up to aspirate. Tap it down to dispense.

Modes on the E4 give you a variety of pipetting options. For example, in Advanced mode, press Options in the lower right. This opens a screen of on/off switches for options like Mix, Volume Sequencing and others.

Let's take Mix as an example. Press in to turn it on, then press Done. Joystick right into settings, move down to the Mix box and press. Here you can adjust mix volume and the number of cycles for your samples to automatically mix. Press Done to set, and Done again to exit settings.

Options also include Mode Presets, which give you a quick way to program a protocol. With any configuration of settings & options saved as a preset, you can glide between them as shown here with the A preset, BOSS preset, and QPCR1 and QPCR2 presets. Notice how different the settings are from preset to preset, and access is instant.

One of the E4's most popular modes is multi-dispense. It's a time and effort saver when you need to fill a plate with multiple columns of reagent. Aspirate just once and dispense multiple aliquots from the same tips. On the E4, shifting aliquot volume can change the number of aliquots, based on the initial volume set. With a 10-microliter volume setting, an aliquot volume of 2 microliters can only be pipetted 5 times. Shifting the number of aliquots can also shift the initial aspiration volume.

To manually multi-dispense, tap the joystick up to aspirate. Tap down to dispense each aliquot, and blow out when done.

You can also multi-dispense automatically at a timed interval that you select.

Press Options, joystick to Auto-Pace, and press the joystick to select it. Move right or left to adjust the auto pace time interval, and press Done to set. Each aliquot is now dispensed automatically after the time interval elapses. Note the timer counting down the time, shown at the top of the screen.

These are just a few highlights of your new Rainin E4 XLS or XLS+.
