A notched sample is taken from a temperature controlled methanol bath, placed in the machine, and the hammer is dropped breaking the sample. The energy required to break the sample is determined from the swing height difference (potential energy change) of the hammer before and after the break. The energy measurement is recorded off of the machine dial.
