Amazon Virtual Private Cloud or VPC is one of the striking features of AWS leveraged by many enterprises. It enables users to launch AWS resources in virtual networks which are defined by users. Amazon VPC delivers the advantage of comprehensive control over the virtual networking environment. Security groups are basically virtual firewalls for EC2 instances of a user. The primary function of security groups is maintenance of control on incoming and outgoing traffic. Security groups include inbound rules for controlling incoming traffic to a specific instance and outbound rules for controlling traffic flowing out from the instance. Launching an instance in a VPC mandatorily requires specification of a security group, created specifically for the concerned VPC.
Network ACL or Access Control List is a security layer for VPC which serves as an option firewall to facilitate traffic control for one or multiple subnets.
