A Colorado police chief on Friday fired three officers over photographs depicting the re-enactment of a chokehold used on Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died after the encounter last year in a Denver suburb.
Two of the Aurora officers fired, Kyle Dittrich and Erica Marrero, posed in the photos taken in October near a memorial for McClain. The third, Jason Rosenblatt, was one of the three officers who stopped McClain in August.
Dittrich, Marrero and Jaron Jones, who resigned earlier this week, sent the photos to Rosenblatt, who responded with a text that said, "Haha." They were fired for conduct unbecoming an officer.
Police stopped McClain as he walked down the street in a ski mask last August for "being suspicious."
McClain's death has become a rallying cry amid a national reckoning over police brutality and racial injustice, with the state now reopening the case for possible criminal charges and federal officials looking into a civil rights investigation after prosecutors last year cleared the officers who confronted him.
