1. Create ONE repeatable presentation and only practice with that. (0:51)

The best speakers in the world present one thing HUNDREDS of times, so you need to find 1 great topic you’re passionate about and present it 50-100 times to clearly show your progress. A lot of people ask me how to find the right topic and the answer’s a lot simpler than you think. Just answer this question. What problem can you solve for someone else? That’s it. Doesn’t need to be public speaking tips for the WORLD, it can be a charity you want to help with their marketing, 3 people you want to help inspire to run a lot more, it doesn’t really matter, just make sure that you’re excited enough to want to present it at least 100 times. I’ve probably given my keynote 500+ times as of this recording, so repetition really is excellence. This is how to get better at presenting.

Let’s now talk a bit more about why the repeatable component is so important here. Think about any skill you’ve mastered in the past few years. This could be a sport, an instrument or really just anything. You know as well as I do that the best way to practice ANYTHING is to do the same thing over and over again until it’s perfect.

2. Record your presentations to scale the way you get feedback. (3:10)

Even after so many workshops and opportunities I’ve had to speak to crowds, I still have a very rigorous system in how I get feedback from the smartest people that I know. My process is very fairly simple, I have peers who come and roast me as a group before any important presentation and I record them to send to multiple friends for timestamped feedback. This way my presentations get x10 better in x10 less time since 20 people are giving me feedback on the same presentation. This is how to get better at presenting.

Let’s breakdown how that exactly works for my practices. Isabela would watch my entire video and give me feedback like skip to 10:41 and notice how you don’t look happy when you say the following this or George would say go to 57:41, I think you should use these words instead. The people that give me feedback are VERY specific with the criticisms so that when I send them Version 2 of the recording, it combines all their feedback into a completely brand-new presentation, so you need to be SHAMELESS about the feedback you want and seek out the people who aren’t afraid to tell you the truth so that you see your progress SKYROCKET as a speaker. This is how to get better at presenting.

3. Unless you’re a world class speaker, always practice with slides. (5:08)

You’re probably thinking, well Brenden like what do you mean? The best speakers in the world don’t use slides, I don’t want to use them, I’m the best. Alright, let’s have a chat. The easiest way to measure progress as a speaker is through your slides. When you make a first draft, generally speaking, they aren’t really good (which is normal the 1st time you work on them), but after 50 times of looking at the slides, changing up the images, making it look nice, your confidence as a speaker goes up dramatically because you see your work of art on a computer. You say, WOW, these slides are AMAZING, I’m going to do such an amazing job with this presentation, so practice with slides and if you don’t want to use them anymore that’s also fine. It’s way easier to give a presentation with slides and then never use them than the opposite, so force yourself to make them and as you see them evolve overtime, so will you. This is how to get better at presenting.
