Dan Charbit, owner of Cut and Cook studio in Paris: "This is a short film that we did mainly for pleasure; we wanted to use our technical skills in an experimental and artistic challenge.

"I've always been fascinated by the relationship between the infinitely small and the infinitely huge. With that in mind, I wanted to take the viewer on a journey through huge and impressive landscapes which are in fact microscopic. Another aspect of the challenge was to make all them beautiful. Someone told me (talking about the bug at the end of the piece), 'It's repulsive, but it's so beautiful' - that I think, sums up what we were looking for.

"Every sequence had its own technical challenges. On the first sequence we had to place and animate over 5,000 scales, which amounted to about 30 million polygons on the larger shots. We had to develop tools to create those using a procedural process. We also automated the use of proxies in mental ray in order to only have a few thousand polygons on screen and get the 30 million back in rendering.

"For the second sequence (the white one) we developed a procedural system to create 'voronoi' structures and animate them according to sounds.

"The eye sequence was an artistic challenge; there were no real difficulties but rather a thorough graphic research with numerous 3D layers cautiously assembled in Nuke by a talented digital compositor.

"The 3D was done on Maya mental ray and the compositing on Nuke. the render farm was managed by Smedge. We also had several managing tools, such as an intranet allowing the graphist to know where we were in the production as well as the retakes, on a daily basis. The whole pipeline was a major asset on this project, since it was organized as in a big studio. Our workstations are Mac and the render farm is mostly PC. The server is Linux and the whole thing works perfectly together.

"We worked with Nicolas Gueguen, who created amazing sound and music. It was a wonderful surprise when we saw the film with the final score. In my opinion, the images wouldn't be so beautiful if it wasn't for Nicolas's work."

Schedule: "We started in June and ended in November. It was long, mostly because it was done alongside other projects, with no delivery constraint."
