In today's video, I'll show you one of the best ways to get rid of excess polishing oil. French polishes or shellac polish differ from other surface treatments in the way it is applied. This is not about lacquering with a brush, a roller or a spray gun, but the application of mycrolayers with a wool rubber wrapped by a cotton, one by one layer with intermediate drying. In the video I will not show the filling of the pores with the pumice, which is a prerequisite for a smooth and shiny surface.
When a completely smooth and fully primed surface is reached, we start polishing the surface with linseed oil. The oil is added to the rubber only in dro-plets, as it should be completely removed from the surface. If it does not become completely cloudy in a few days. Here, the oil serves as a lubricant to keep the rubber flowing nicely and not sticky to the surface. At the same time the surface is very fine sanded, so we get a very nice glare. However, if we want to keep this luster, the oil must be completely removed.
Let's prepare two chemicals that will serve us to remove the oil. Diluted 5 % H2SO4 sulfuric acid and burnt lime (calcium oxide or chalk) CaO. We both need to be very careful and provide protection. The sulfuric acid is always prepared by pouring the acid into the water and not vice versa, as it may cause an explosion.
After one day of drying, the surface is coated with a prepared cloth soaked in acid. We notice that it becomes very cloudy. This is normal and is due to the reaction of the oil with acid. Immediately afterwards, the palms of our hands are dusted with lime and the surface is cleaned to neutralize all the acid. A very bright, transparent and clear shellac surface is immediately noticeable. Remains of lime and fingerprints are removed by a wood spray polish.
