Diepkloof Hostel residents have been allocated brand new homes. The new developments are aimed creating integrated communities and promoting social cohesion and nation building.

These units are among 60 at Diepkloof Hostel that have been converted into family units by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) under the Soweto Hostels Redevelopment and Upgrading Programme.

The transformation of the single-sex hostels into integrated family units is a positive move away from the dehumanising conditions under which migrant workers lived, stemming from apartheid-era housing policies. *HN
