I have had the honor of playing the Ralph Peterson Signature Snare called the "Onyx" by Mapex. (Black Panther Series)

For starters - I am happy that they have ventured into the Wood Hoops for snares. It has been a long time since I played them - and I had to remember what the felt and sounded like. Receiving this from which was a virgin right out of the box - I spent a little time with the tuning ranges to find out where it sits best to my ear. Also - I am a HUGE Evans drumhead guy (I endorse em) - and this was a bonus.

It was also a long time since I played Onyx skins!

So after getting the drum and skin dialled in - and spending some time getting it warmed up, I was MORE than happy with the girth of sound I was receiving from this drum.

Let start some details here:

It just looks dang awesome. (mic drop)
The major sound difference is derived (for me) was the depth of the drum (never played a snare that deep before), and the and the wood hoops. This gave the drum more tonal resonance, and with the Wood Hoop - instead of the metal crack that would be likened to be sliced in half by a katana blade - this was more like being broken over the back with strongest piece of 2 x 4 wood.
The Onyx skin is a good call because it resonant drum - the Onyx provides full tonal range while subduing "some" frequencies and sustain. You could use other skins as well to reduce even more sustain - but for me - make sure it is black - cause the white skin will probably make the drum look more like an Oreo than an Onyx Snare. (The Snare with it's black stealth mode is captivating!!!) Also if you other skins that may be black as well - but it might change some of its dynamic range. Adding the Onyx Skin - also adds a certain degree of "punch"

Some specs for you all!

Size: 14 x 8
Shell: 7 Ply 6.85mm Maple
Finish: Transparent Black Maple Burl
Edges: SONIClear 45º Bearing Edge
Snare Bed: 2.7mm Deep x 5.5" Width
Hoops: Black Maple Hoops
Lugs: In-Line Locking B-lugs, Black Plated/3 Air Vents
Drumheads: Evans Onyx Black Batter Side/Evans 300 Snare Side.
Model Number: SEBPNML4800BKTB

All in all - this is a GREAT drum. If you are more of a person who wants more of that "staccato" very short drum - maybe you will require some additional dampening (more that what I did in this video) - but understand that this is an 8" deep drum... no one really gets a drum like this to be significantly "staccato!"

I super recommend this drum - I have not played a Black Panther Snare that I didn't like. I am still loving this snare and the more I play it - The more I love it!!! Out of all the BP Snares I have played - this was the most different for me - a little more foreign to what I was used to - BUT - I am glad to have this sound in my repertoire - and will get used more frequently than I originally though.

Mapex Drums.

Well Done.
Well Played.
