SCUBA DIVING UNDER A WATERFALL || Exploring Oregon Rivers

In Reid Adventures Episode 8, I, along with dive buddies Caleb and Sean, dive an area of the Illinois River in Southern Oregon known as "The Swinging Bridge." With depths reaching over 50 feet and the warmest water I have dove thus far, it makes for quite an enjoyable dive site.

On our first dive we travel upriver, crossing over a small rapid to reach a sizable waterfall. Scuba diving under a waterfall isn't for the faint of heart nor is it advised. We were not in danger due to the flow being pretty low this time of year, however, things can change in an instant. Ensure that you proceed with caution.

On our second dive we wanted to exceed one hour underwater. To do so safely on single tanks you must control your Surface Air Consumption Rate (SAC Rate). That is how much gas you inhale and exhale at the surface. There are a few ways to help reduce your consumption rate with the best being to not exert yourself. I practice a ten second breath. Breathing in for 4 seconds and out for 6. That means I am trying to only breath 6 times a minute. Experience also greatly helps improve your SAC Rate due to your comfort level in the water. On this dive we easily surpassed one hour with enough gas to to for probably another 15 to 20 minutes, however, you plan your dive and dive your plan. The plan was to dive one hour. Without a significant reason to greatly adjust the plan, then that is what we were going to do.
