Around 2,000 Italian civilians working at U.S. military bases in Italy have gone unpaid due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown. Most affected are employees at Aviano Air Base and Vicenza Army Base in northeastern Italy. While U.S. Navy base staff received their salaries, army and air force personnel were not paid, as they operate under separate funding systems. Italy’s foreign ministry has urged Washington to resolve the issue immediately, warning that the crisis is impacting livelihoods. The Pentagon is now exploring emergency funding options to cover missed payments.
