Shocking Orb Embermage Gameplay in Tarroch's Tomb (NG+ Elite)

I've finally maxed out my 4th Embermage in Torchlight 2. This time, it's an electric mage build that focuses on filling the entire screen with Shocking Orbs.

Unlike more straightforward builds centered around Prismatic Bolt or Frost Wave, this build gains access to its main skill relatively late in the game. That makes it tricky to play in the early game, requiring a bit of patience. But it's all worth it, as Shocking Orb is an incredibly fun skill to have. It's definitely underrated compared to other skills in the Embermage's Storm tree.

If you want an easier grind, you may use Prismatic Bolt as your primary skill early on as you grind towards level 42 for Shocking Orb. I, on the other hand, chose an auto-attack strategy in the early game supported by Blazing Pillar and Hailstorm.

As soon as I unlocked Shocking Orb at level 42, it then became my primary skill. You can bind it to the left mouse button, which makes it very convenient to use in battle.

What makes this Embermage build different from other lightning mages is that I have Fire Brand, Ice Brand, and Lightning Brand maxed out. You see, Blazing Pillar and Hailstorm have a very high chance of burning and freezing foes. And so if you combine this with Shocking Orbs' tendency to linger on the screen, you'll be triggering all three Brands constantly and consistently.

The main skill rotation goes like this:
Death's Bounty — Blazing Pillar — Hailstorm — Shocking Orb (x5)

If you follow this skill rotation especially against bosses and champions, you'll be triggering Fire Brand, Ice Brand, and Lightning Brand consistently throughout the duration of the battle.

Death's Bounty is absolutely essential to this build. It allows you to heal both HP and mana as Shocking Orbs zap your foes around. Also, don't forget to use Frost Phase to get out of sticky situations.

Use Ice Prison if you need to nuke or hold a monster in place. The 2-second cooldown makes Ice Prison the most utilitarian and powerful skill in an Embermage's arsenal. When all pillars shatter at the same time, they have a potential to deal millions of damage on monsters encased within the ice.

Thunder Locus is still a must-have in this build. It's a force multiplier just like Blazing Pillar and Shocking Orb. But if you must choose between Thunder Locus and Blazing Pillar, choose Thunder Locus. It's much more convenient to use. I just happen to like Blazing Pillar a lot, and so I went with both skills.

I had so much fun playing this lightning mage. At the beginning, I wondered if I should center this build around Shockbolts instead of Shocking Orb. I'm so glad I went with Shocking Orb.
