"EduQuest: The Journey Begins" is a promotional video made in 1992 by a daughter company of IBM called EduQuest to communicate their vision of IBM future technology as applied to educational institutions such as elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools, for students, parents of students, and teachers and school staff. The video is hosted and narrated by Nichelle Nichols from Star Trek. I am posting this video as an educational time capsule of imaginative technology that has now become real. No copyright infringement is intended.
This promotional video was clearly made using special effects and prop hardware, rather than functioning machines, but all the futurist ideas envisioned by special effects in this video made in 1992 have now come fully true en masse in 2020, somewhat spurred to completion during 2020 itself because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and therefore the need for mass telecommuting, mass video teleconferencing, and mass distance learning. The futurist ideas shown in this video include:
Video calls/teleconferencing, including picture-in-picture and screen sharing (such as on Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, Microsoft Teams, Cisco WebEx, GoToMeeting, and TeamViewer)
Searchable digital resource videos on demand (for research sources, as well as how-to/instructional) (such as on YouTube and Vimeo)
Digital video editing (such as in Microsoft Movie Maker, Apple Final Cut Pro or iMovie, Adobe Premiere, Blender, and Sony Vegas)
Automatic language translation (such as via Google Translate and Microsoft Translate)
E-mail (such as in Microsoft Outlook)
Shared access to organizational calendars (such as in Microsoft Outlook and Apple iCalendar)
Tablet computers for each person (such as Microsoft Surface, iPad, iPhone, Android phones and tablets, and Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets)
Video headsets or virtual reality headsets (such as Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift, and HTC VIVE)
Computer touchscreens of all sizes, from smartphone size to blackboard size
Wireless connectivity (such as via wifi and BlueTooth)
Multiple screen control from one device (such as via multi-monitor computers, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, and Google Chromecast)
Voice recognition and dictation (such as in Apple Siri, Microsoft Cortana, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Dragon Dictation)
I am sorry for the poor quality of the video. This is the best transfer I could do given the present quality of the videotape. I definitely wish I had a new copy from which to create a transfer, because this video always made me imagine being in a place full of computers that could do all the things I saw them do here. And now, here I am, surrounded by such computers and resources, and therefore able to make this historic video available for you to see as a time capsule of technological dreams that people made come true.
The printed sticker on the videotape reads:
