It's 4:23 AM and I'm sitting in my car in church parking lot cause apparently I needed physically return to scene of my theological crime to process what I did wrong today. Also stress-cleaned entire apartment at 2 AM and ran out things to scrub so here we are.
Today's lesson was supposed be simple. Prayer. How to talk to God. Basic stuff that shouldn't require advanced theological training explain to seven-year-olds.

Demonstrated by praying in super formal "Dear Heavenly Father we come before You today" church voice that sounds nothing like how any human actually talks
Lily immediately asks "Do you have to say Dear Heavenly Father or God won't know you're talking to Him?" and instead saying "No just say Hey God" I said "it's good to be respectful"
Kids started asking if you have to close eyes or God can't hear you and what if you forget say "in Jesus name" does prayer not count
Sophie whispered "What if you don't know right words? What if you're not smart enough to pray good?" and my heart shattered
Created elaborate prayer protocol about closing eyes helps you focus and folding hands shows respect turning it into spiritual etiquette class
Ethan prayed "Please help me remember all right words when I pray so You don't get mad at me" - I created anxiety about prayer in six-year-old
Two months ago taught persistent prayer accidentally gave impression kids need bug God constantly or He won't listen
Last month said we should "lift up" people in prayer now half my class thinks prayer involves physically lifting things toward ceiling
This ain't about teaching proper reverence - it's what happened when I turned beautiful simple concept of talking to someone who loves you into theological obstacle course where God's apparently cranky teacher grading prayer performance. Some disasters showed me I keep making weird and complicated what should be easiest thing in world.
For teachers accidentally creating prayer anxiety, anyone realizing God cares about hearts not vocabulary, or people learning reverence comes from heart not fancy words.
