Playthrough with Cyber Shredder. This is the Super Nintendo version of Tournament Fighters, which is included on the TMNT Cowabunga Collection. Unlike previous TMNT games, which had been scrolling beat ‘em ups or platformers, this is a one on one fighting game.

Of all the games on this collection, this was the one I was most excited to play. It hadn’t been re-released before now and it had a positive reception with fans. Then I played it and… meh. It doesn’t quite play as well as I thought it would, like it’s a slightly wrong version of Street Fighter II which isn’t as good. Some of the hitboxes on the moves are very questionable, like Shredder’s strong kick seemingly connects with the opponent, but they don’t get hit by it. I do like a few things about this game, the presentation is great and it has some nice music.

The CPU is obnoxious as well. It tends to block a bit too much and frame perfect counters a lot too. There are a few exploits you can use against certain characters, like with War you can usually win just doing jumping strong kicks followed by crouching strong kick.

There are two bosses, who can’t be used in single player but can be unlocked for two player matches. Rat King is the first boss, he's easy to beat as you can usually just jump forward with a strong kick and he'll try and drop kick you but fail.

Karai is the final boss. You have to be playing on the default difficulty or above to get her to appear. Apparently a lot of people thought Karai was a character created for this game, but she actually appeared in the comics first. She just never appeared in the cartoon series, which is what probably threw a lot fans off. She’s also incredibly cheap in this game, but with Shredder you can keep her pinned down with his aura crusher move. Keep doing this until the super gauge is full, use the lightning crusher, then repeat.

This game is notable for having super moves. You have a super gauge you have to fill up, once it’s full you can use your super move. I think this is the first fighting game to feature a super gauge that works like this, and it’s be something many fighting games released later would feature. The problem with the one in this game is that it takes a while to charge up, you really have to be constantly attacking the opponent to get the gauge fill. The gauge slowly depletes if you don’t attack. One nice thing is that everyone’s super move input is easy to do: press the strong punch and kick buttons together.
