GSA Lecture Series: coda | practice as project by Mark Raymond

Currently Director of the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) at the University of Johannesburg, Mark Raymond is an architect, educator, and academic leader. Mark has worked across the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and the US, integrating design, teaching, and research within a dynamic framework of inclusive and future-facing architectural education and practice.

At the GSA his work has focused on cultivating diverse, collaborative communities of practice and inquiry, guided by a commitment to equity, interdisciplinarity, and critical innovation. Building upon the GSA’s foundational Transformative Pedagogies—an approach that positions architectural education as a space for radical experimentation and social engagement— under his direction the GSA has sought to explore how Transformative Pedagogies are translated into Transformative Practices, bridging critical reflection and practice-based research. His research interests lie in the intersections of architecture, identity, and postcolonial spatial practice, shaped by his doctoral work at RMIT University and his continuing practice in the Caribbean.

Through coda, Mark reflects on the last five years of institutional leadership, on cultural production – and on South Africa, marking a moment of transition for the GSA as he leaves to take up a position as Professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture at ISU in the US.
